We had the pleasure of meeting a great group of young people from Huntington University, IN the other day who tried our new black bread. Lee took them on a tour of the bakery, Shayne talked about the making of the bread and how we're trying activated charcoal for a natural color. Thanks, y'all, for your opinion on the bread! Not only is this a very flattering post about the bakery, but how cool is this picture? 😍 Thanks, Dennis Glosson & Jamie Puckett, for posting this! BTW, this is the mirror where our creamers and condiments are...I have meant to try this place for years, and we finally did today. I wish I would have visited it years ago. I had the Morgan's Special and my husband had the Lots of Lox. Wow. If I were not so full from Breakfast I would go back for lunch. Just like being back in New York. New favorite place. HISTORY OF THE KING CAKE Mardi Gras season begins on January 6, of each year and ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent. One of the wonderful traditions of Mardi Gras, and probably the most delicious, is the King Cake. In New Orleans, King Cake parties are held throughout the Mardi Gras season. In offices, classrooms, and homes throughout the city, King Cakes are sliced and enjoyed by all. Like the Biblical story, the "search for the baby" adds excitement, as each person waits to see in which slice of cake the baby will be discovered. While custom holds that the person who "finds" the baby will be rewarded with "good luck", that person is also traditionally responsible for bringing the King Cake to the next party or gathering.
The "traditional" King Cake is made from twisted strands of cinnamon dough, covered by poured sugar and sprinkled with purple, green and gold colored sugar. Today, many additional varieties of King Cake are also available by adding cream cheese, or other fillings to the "traditional" King Cake.
Enjoy a taste of New Orleans by starting the King Cake tradition in your home, classroom, or office today. Have a safe and Happy Mardi Gras! ... See MoreSee Less

Calling ALL Volunteers … SURFRIDER needs YOU!
WE NEED YOU to help us pull off our 6th Annual Oyster Roast and Bloody Mary Contest at Wicked Tuna Sunday Feb. 17th. Whether you’ve volunteered before or want to get involved for the first time, please let us know.
We always need quality people to do everything from recycling oyster shells to judging Bloody Mary’s. It’s some of the most FUN work you’ll do all year.
The official event starts at 11am and ends at 6pm; however, the more realistic timetable is 7am – 7pm with set up and break down.
We need people on site at 7am to organize check -in and set up the Surfrider tents, Ticket Sales, Kidz Zone and inflatables, New South Beer station, and the Tito’s Podzilla mobile bar not to mention last minute adjustments in the Oyster Garden.
All Food Trucks and other vendors/competitors must be on site by 9am and ready to go by 11am so we need to help them get in, unload, and set up as quickly as possible. We need hands to fast track this process – especially move cars – and help the stage crew and bands get set up as well.
Throughout the event, we will need volunteers to recycle oyster shells, empty trash/recycling bins, sort trash and recycling, check wristbands for the Oyster Garden, and help with the Kidz Zone, inflatables, and children’s Arts & Crafts, among other things.
At 5pm, we will start assisting vendors/competitors with their trash/recycling and start breaking down tables/tents, as needed. The goal is to have everyone out by 6pm so we can begin cleaning the Oyster Garden, Oyster Tables, and sweeping the parking lot and Kidz Zone for trash. Including a final sorting or trash/recycling at the dumpster.
With luck, we can be done by 7pm and convene at the Tuna Shak for a well-deserved brew!
If you’re an experienced Roast volunteer, let us know ASAP if you’d like to be a TEAM LEADER and supervise a crew at this year’s event. Also, if you have a sports team, church group, school club, or civic group, or non-profit etc. who might like to help out, then we would love to have you.
The hardest part is always cleaning up and breaking down at the end of the day so please plan on sticking around if you can. We will have water, drinks, and food for volunteers throughout the day and event t-shirts for anyone who works more than 4 hours.
Sign up at the Volunteer Meeting 6-8pm Thursday 1/24 at Wicked Tuna or online through our website or Facebook.
Yes – if you need community service hours, then we will gladly sign off on them, provided you do the work; this includes clubs, teams, etc.
Thank you again for your support. We look forward to seeing you soon,
LONG LIVE THE BEACH!!!
Your Friendly Neighborhood Surfriders
Oh no! Sorry about that. I'll change it right now!
The date is February 17th. Please make sure to sign up online so we can collect your contact information. We should be sending out job assignments in the next week. Thanks for the share!
